The 7-Day Room-by-Room Moving Countdown: Pack Smarter, Not Harder

2 min read

Moving day has a way of arriving faster than expected. One minute you have plenty of time, and the next you’re surrounded by half-packed rooms, loose belongings, and no idea where the tape went.

The solution isn’t packing everything at once. It’s packing in the right order.

For families moving across Dallas–Fort Worth, a simple seven-day countdown can turn a stressful pack-out into a manageable process. Here’s how to tackle your home one room at a time.

7 Days Out: Start With the Rooms You Use Least

Begin with guest rooms, formal dining rooms, home offices, storage areas, and seasonal items.

  • Pack décor, books, extra linens, collectibles, and anything you won’t need this week.

  • Create three categories as you work: Move, Donate, and Trash.

  • Label every moving tote with the room name and general contents.

  • Avoid filling large containers entirely with heavy items such as books. Mix heavier and lighter belongings to keep loads manageable.

DFW Pro Tip: Texas heat can be rough on sensitive belongings. Keep medications, electronics, important documents, candles, and heat-sensitive valuables with you rather than leaving them inside a hot vehicle or garage.

5–6 Days Out: Bedrooms and Closets

Now move into bedrooms and closets.

Pack off-season clothing, extra shoes, decorations, spare bedding, and anything you won’t use before moving day. Leave each family member with a small suitcase containing several days of clothing, toiletries, chargers, and daily essentials.

Reusable plastic moving totes work especially well here because you can pack, close the attached lid, stack, and move on without stopping to assemble and tape cardboard boxes.

2–4 Days Out: Kitchen, Bathrooms and Main Living Areas

The kitchen usually takes longer than people expect, so don’t save it for moving morning.

Pack specialty appliances, serving dishes, extra cookware, pantry items, wall décor, games, and entertainment equipment. Leave only the basics needed for your final meals.

Use towels and linens to cushion appropriate breakable items, and keep liquids upright and securely sealed.

At this point, your home should start looking noticeably emptier.

1 Day Out: Create a “First Night” Setup

Do not pack everything onto the moving truck.

Prepare one clearly marked tote or bag with the things you’ll want immediately at your new DFW home:

  • Toilet paper and paper towels

  • Chargers

  • Medications

  • Basic toiletries

  • Cleaning supplies

  • Important documents

  • Kids’ essentials

  • Snacks and bottled water

  • Basic tools

Keep this with you or make it the last item loaded and first item unloaded.
